Feeding Westchester partners with MVCSD to bring pre-K families a healthy cooking class
Feeding Westchester teamed up with Mount Vernon City School District to bring pre-K families a “Kids in the Kitchen” workshop on Thursday, December 8, 2022.
Parents had the opportunity to learn about the benefits of good nutrition and healthy meal planning tips, and how to create simple, healthy snacks for children.
“We hosted a healthy cooking class to promote positive nutrition for our students and families,” said Dr. Gayle White-Wallace, director of Pre-K, Gifted & Talented and Special Projects.
The event began with a presentation about the five food groups and encouraging students to try different food.
“Different types of food make our bodies run differently,” said Monique Marshall, registered dietitian and manager at Feeding Westchester. “The types of foods that we put into our bodies, will determine if we are strong and healthy.”
Students then moved into the kitchen where they made pizza and zucchini brownies with their families.
“It’s great to see the smiles on their faces,” said Stessy Lovinsky, junior at Mount Vernon High School.
Mount Vernon High School culinary students along with Chef Samantha Cohen, culinary teacher, were there to help aid the families as well.
“They are the next generation of chefs,” said Makayla Williams, senior at MVHS.
